SALT LAKE CITY — After a FrontRunner train crashed into a car this morning, UTA reminded drivers to call for help if stuck on tracks.
The crash happened at 700 W. 600 S. in Provo. Though the accident totaled the car, no one was injured, according to UTA spokesman Carl Arky. He said the passengers were not in the car at the time of the crash.
Arky said that the passengers’ car was on the tracks for seven minutes before the crash. He said they did not alert anyone to their situation during those seven minutes.
“Our train was going fairly slow, but they didn’t have enough time to stop,” said Arky.
He added that notifying a nearby police department, or calling the number listed on the crossing’s signs, could have helped to avoid the crash. Arky added that UTA could have slowed the train if it had been aware of the situation.
UTA shared a video to help drivers know what to do if stuck on a railway crossing.
The video advises drivers to exit their vehicle and find the Emergency Notification System sign. The video advised that drivers call the number on the sign for help, and use the crossing number listed to identify their location. The crossing number is used to alert incoming train traffic to the situation.
