SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes could reportedly run for Senate in 2024.

According to Politico, a person familiar with Reyes’ plans said the AG would finalize a decision and announce any bid in May. This could pit Reyes against Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, in a GOP primary, should the junior senator choose to run for re-election.

Reyes’ general consultant for his campaign, Alan Crooks, says there was no comment on the AG’s possible run but said Reyes is “well set up for whatever he wants to do in politics.”

Romney has not made his plans for 2024 public and hasn’t confirmed plans for reelection or retirement. According to Politico, Reyes’ decision will not be influenced by Romney’s plans either way.

Romney told Politico if Reyes does end up running, it’s the best news he could get. Romney reportedly laughed while responding to the request for comment.

Politico reports Reyes has been discussing the potential run with allies of former President Donald Trump and other players in Utah politics. Reyes backed Trump’s efforts to challenge the 2020 election results.

Politico reported that Greg Smith, a former Trump White House official, confirmed there is support for Reyes to run for Senate.
