SALT LAKE CITY — Two people were killed in separate crashes on Sunday, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.

Emery County crash

According to the UHP, a 2022 white Ford with a male driver was hauling a trailer with three vehicles on it. At about 1:46 a.m., the driver pulled over into the emergency lane to check on his load. The vehicle was traveling eastbound I-70 near milepost 158 when a 2015 silver Kia Sportage drifted into the right emergency lane.

Authorities are uncertain why the Kia Sportage drifted over into the emergency lane. The Kia collided with the trailer, which caused severe frontend damage to the Kia, according to the UHP.

The Kia had four occupants inside. The driver and the two children in the back were airlifted to area hospitals with serious injuries. The front passenger died from injuries sustained in the accident.

The driver of the Ford was not injured. The victim has not been identified.

Summit County crash

On Sunday evening, the UHP says a 2006 GMC Sierra was discovered off the roadway of SR-248 near milepost 2 heading westbound into Park City.

According to the UHP, the vehicle had made contact with the side guardrail on the right-side of the highway. It then struck the guardrail on the southside of SR-248. The Sierra then went down an embankment, coming to a rest in a marsh.

A female occupant, who had not been wearing a seat belt was found inside the Sierra. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The UHP says alcohol was discovered inside the vehicle and impairment is suspected as a contributing factor in the crash.
