SALT LAKE CITY — Sen. Mitt Romney. R-UT, joined a group of senators calling to have Russia removed from the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Romney joined 11 other senators who will send the letter to United States Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, in hopes that she will introduce the resolution.
Utah’s junior senator has been very vocal about the invasion of Ukraine. He has vocalized his disapproval of the U.S. not sending MiG fighter jets to Ukrainians in need.
Some of the other senators include Marco Rubio, R-FL; Tim Kaine, D-VA; and Cory Booker, D-NJ.
“In February, Russia launched a massive military invasion into the free and sovereign nation of Ukraine, resulting in thousands of causalities, including that of children, pregnant women, health workers, journalists, and countless others,” wrote the senators. “We have seen the indiscriminate shelling of apartment buildings, hospitals, and schools and the slaughter of fleeing civilians. The multitude of crimes committed by the Russian Federation, and by Vladimir Putin himself, demonstrates that the Russian government has no intention of upholding international human rights.”
The council has a process to remove a state that is allegedly committing crimes or abuses. It’s a simple two-thirds majority vote from the U.N. General Assembly to remove any state.
The senators are calling for that process to happen immediately.
