SALT LAKE CITY — A 28-year-old man is in custody following a brief standoff with Salt Lake City police Thursday after he allegedly stole a truck from a downtown motel.

Suspect reportedly stole a truck

According to police, a call of a stolen vehicle came in Thursday morning at 5:28 a.m. A motel security guard called to report his vehicle was being stolen from 170 West 600 South.

A search for the suspect and the stolen vehicle immediately began.

The vehicle was spotted in the area of 1300 South State Street by an officer, who attempted to make a traffic stop. However, police say the suspect fled the scene in a reckless manner. Authorities did not pursue the suspect.

A short time later, officers reported seeing the truck crash in a parking lot at Salt Lake Community College. The truck landed on its side.

In responding to the crash, officers began talking to the suspect, who has been identified as Davis Stoney. Police say that Stoney sat on top of the vehicle as they gave him commands. However, he would not comply to their orders.

A short standoff

After a 30-minute standoff with Stoney, authorities used multiple bean bag rounds from a less-lethal shotgun to get him off the truck. However, that attempt was not successful.

Police say a tactical plan to approach Stoney was developed, and he was safely taken into custody.

According to police, Stoney suffered minor injuries from the accident. He was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Once Stoney was medically cleared, police say he was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail for investigation of possession of a stolen vehicle, interfering with an arresting officer, and fleeing in a vehicle.

There were no other injuries reported as a result of the incident.
