SALT LAKE CITY — A 38-year-old man was taken into custody Monday by Salt Lake City Police in connection with an auto-pedestrian collision in a parking garage at SLC International Airport. The collision resulted in the death of his wife, police said.

According to police documents obtained by KSL on Tuesday, there was evidence of alcohol at the scene and the suspect, 38-year-old Shawn Christopher Sturgeon, appeared to have been intoxicated.

Auto-pedestrian collision at SLC International Airport

Salt Lake City police said they were notified about a vehicle collision at  615 North Parking Plaza at 2:39 p.m.

Officers with the Salt Lake City Police Department Airport Division responded to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found 29-year-old Charlotte Sturgeon with critical injuries.

Despite life-saving measures performed at both the airport and hospital, Sturgeon died from her injuries.

During the course of the investigation, police discovered that Shawn Christopher Sturgeon allegedly ran over his wife on the second-level of the short-term airport parking garage, while driving an SUV, police said.

The police also said the couple had just arrived home from a vacation.

Police also said that shortly after the crash, the suspect drove the vehicle from the garage to airport parking payment booths. As he drove, his wife was critically injured inside. At the payment booths, police said, the suspect asked for assistance.

Two crime scenes

Because the suspect drove from the garage to the payment booths, police said two crime scenes were established to collect evidence.

Police said that the suspect was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail. He was booked for investigation of one count of automobile homicide.

According to police, there was no interruption to airport operations or air travel as a result of this incident.
