SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Public Safety has a new tool that helps people track the crime happening in their counties.

By choosing a county and police jurisdiction, for example, Cottonwood Heights, the Crime in Utah Dashboards will display data and allow anybody using the dashboard to search it.

“We are constantly looking for ways to be more transparent,” said Jess Anderson, commissioner of the Utah Department of Public Safety.

Transparency builds trust. This type of easy access to nearly real-time data will help anyone to better understand crime trends in their communities.”

Users can track specific crimes, again, in any county in the state. And they can see how many crimes the state has solved.

Historically, the Utah Department of Public Safety would publish annual crime data reports. DPS will update the new interactive dashboards monthly.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations has a similar system that can track crime data in Utah, but its latest information is from 2020. Utah’s updated system offers data through January 2022.

Editor’s note: This article has been updated to clarify the kind of data that can be pulled from the tool.
