SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) released its enforcement numbers from Jan. 1 through April 10 of this year on Tuesday.

And while there have been some improvements from previous years, there are several trends that are heading in the wrong direction.

UHP enforcement numbers

According to the UHP, crashes have decreased by 17 percent over a five-year average. However, the UHP also reports that fatal crashes have increased by 43 percent over the same time period. Additionally, fatalities have gone up by 22 percent over the five-year period.

The UHP also reports that there have been 15,508 crashes around the state, which is a 4 percent increase from the same time period in 2021. Of those crashes, there were 79 fatal crashes, and that is 23 percent increase from 2021.

According to the UHP, there have been five additional wrong way drivers in the early portion of 2022 over the same time in 2021. More alarming, the UHP has stopped an additional 230 drivers going in excess of 100 mph over this time last year.

In all, a little more than 38,000 motorists have been stopped for speeding in 2022. That is nearly 6,000 additional stops from 2021.

Through April 10, the UHP says five of its troopers have been struck. During the same time frame in 2021, 10 troopers had been hit.
