SALT LAKE CITY — Intermountain Healthcare is kicking off Earth Week with a landscaping renovation. According to Intermountain, this is the largest landscaping overhaul the health system will take on.

Renovations to the landscape will save over 17.5 million gallons of water annually.

Intermountain facilities have applied high-tech watering systems at five of their locations. Furthermore, Intermountain facilities have used a landscaping method called xeriscaping which requires little or no watering.

The new high-tech irrigation system will help reduce the amount of water used. The system will “reduce watering and detect leaks,” according to Intermountain.

Crews have removed over 10 acres of grass. Removing this grass will save around 9.2 million gallons of water and over $120,000 in maintenance costs yearly.

These renovations will greatly contribute to saving water as Utah still experiences a severe drought.
