SALT LAKE CITY — Waterline construction started Monday and is causing traffic restrictions on State Street.

The Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities, SLCDPU, is advising drivers to plan ahead when traveling on State Street, between North Temple and 300 North.

The department advised drivers to avoid the area when possible and find alternate routes. State Street will be closed to through traffic and available to local traffic only.

The SLCDPU said the water line work is scheduled to be completed by August 2022.

Traffic impact will be on:

The department said the water line work would “maintain the infrastructure” needed to keep up with downtown Salt Lake’s growth.

Crews will install new water lines, replace residential water meters, and provide sewer rehabilitation.

The water main on State Street between 1st Avenue and 200 North will be replaced. SLCDPU said the main is over 100 years old.

Sewer lines on 200 N and Hillside Ave., from State Street to Main Street will also be worked on.

More information on the water line work on State Street can be found here. The website includes a map that provides detour routes and the timeline for the project.
