SALT LAKE CITY — Gardening and trying to grow vegetables can start to get tricky if you live in an urban area, and when you start getting older.

In the latest video from the KSL Greenhouse Show, hosts Maria Shilaos and Taun Beddes visit Mathew Jentzsch to learn how to grow vegetables in containers for easy growing.

Mathew came up with the concept of growing vegetables in containers after his garden was invaded by weeds.

Starting a garden in containers

According to Mat, we need a 20-gallon container because they have great depth and width. You can fit carious vegetables during the season in one container.

Backyard soil is not ideal to use for the container. Buying premium soil to start the process is best, or you can mix your own soil.

If you have a small area where the sun shines, you can put the container there and grow different crops throughout the year.

Solar caps

Another tip by Mat is to use a solar cap that fits perfectly in the 20-gallon containers. “This (solar cap) will heat the soil up and get it where I can start growing during cool-season…” said Mat.

Using solar caps can help you extend your gardening season by starting two months earlier.
