Tooele couple arrested for abusive “discipline” of two boys

TOOELE, Utah — Police in Tooele have arrested a couple and accused them of using abusive discipline with their two youngest children. The abuse reportedly included forcing the boys to stand for hours with a box on their heads.

According to a probable cause statement filed by Tooele police, Lori Carling told the children it was a form of discipline. Along with the boxes, the boys’ hands were tied behind their backs with shoelaces.

If they moved, officers said they were required to stand on one foot.

The two boys, ages eight and five years old, are the youngest of six siblings in the household. An 11-year-old brother took a video of the “discipline” and showed it to his principal at school. The principal then called the police.

Officers went to the home and found evidence they said corroborated the boys’ stories.

The Deseret News reports Carling’s husband, Chris Andersen, was also arrested. According to police, Anderson had knowledge of what was going on and was sometimes involved in the abuse.

The state has taken custody of the two youngest boys, while the other four children are with relatives.
