SALT LAKE CITY — Left lane loafers, or those drivers who do not move to the right when another vehicle wants to pass them, were out in force in Davis County over the holiday weekend.
So much so, the Sheriff’s office said, that they received a dozen phone calls from irritated drivers.
And while they understand the irritation, Davis County officials said, they ask that drivers do not call emergency services or 911 to report it.
In a Facebook post, they said that they understand left lane loafers to be a “nuisance.” The Sheriff’s office used the opportunity to remind drivers that Utah law states a driver must move to the right if they are traveling on a highway with more than one lane and a driver approaches from behind.
They said this is the case “regardless of how fast you’re driving.”
However, they said that this does not rise to the level of an emergency. It also does not warrant a call to a non-emergency line, officials said.
What does rise to the level of a call to emergency services is if a driver is acting erratically, or appears to be intoxicated. In that case, other drivers are asked to call 911.
