SALT LAKE CITY  — The thirteenth annual Clear the Air Challenge is about to begin in Utah. The goal is to find solutions to eliminate Utah’s notoriously bad air.

The challenge is sponsored by the Salt Lake Chamber, the Utah Clean Air Partnership (UCAIR,) and the Utah Department of Transportation’s TravelWise program. It has been taken up by Utah businesses, government offices, and community leaders.

The month-long challenge aims to reduce vehicle emissions by encouraging more Utahns to choose alternatives to driving alone.

According to cleartheairchallenge.org, transportation emissions are responsible for almost 50% of the pollutants that make up Utah’s poor air quality.

How to take the Clear the Air Challenge

The challenge started in 2009 and, since then, cleartheair.org estimates participants have improved Utah’s air quality by eliminating more than 6,000 tons of emissions.

It is also estimated that the challenge eliminated a million trips totaling 19 million miles.
