SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — A semi-truck transporting over 200 beehives rolled over on I-80 Monday afternoon.

The crash occurred around mile marker 149 near Park City. Park City Fire Department and Utah Highway Patrol responded to the scene.

A video of the scene can be seen here.

Sergeant Cameron Roden with Utah Highway Patrol said the driver of the semi-truck has been taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Along with this, he said there have been a few bee stings, but nothing serious.

Bees on the road

The accident caused many of the hives to break on the roadway, causing the right lane to be closed. Summit County estimated a clearance time of 1:45 p.m..

“They did have things completely closed down for a little bit, as the bees were causing an issue,” Roden said. “They have opened one lane eastbound, so traffic is moving through.”

Roden said drivers were encouraged to have their windows rolled up while crews were clearing the area.

Park City Fire District released a statement to their Facebook page warning hikers to avoid the area as beekeepers work to recover as many bees as possible.
