Busy Fourth of July weekend for Utah Highway Patrol

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Highway Patrol announced Tuesday its Troopers had a busy Fourth of July weekend around the state.

In statistics released Tuesday, the UHP says its Troopers responded to three fatal crashes over the holiday weekend that resulted in three deaths.

The UHP said during the 2021 Fourth of July weekend, there was one fatal crash with one fatality.

In all, the UHP says five people lost their lives in five different crashes over the weekend.

According to the statistics, UHP Troopers made contact with 4,937 drivers over the weekend, which was a 26% increase from 2021 (3,927). There was a total of 16 crashes. 

Additionally, 2,503 motorists were stopped for speeding. Of those stopped, 94 drivers were going in excess of 100 miles per hour. Nearly 600 individuals were stopped for equipment issues. Another 80 were pulled over for DUI and one wrong-way driver.

The UHP says emphasis over the holiday weekend was on speeding, seat belts, equipment issues, and impaired driving.
