SALT LAKE CITY — A heat record for the Salt Lake valley area was tied Sunday.
The National Weather Service Salt Lake City reported the SLC International Airport hit the century mark again.
This ties the record of 100-plus degree days in a year at 21. Additionally, it pushes us to 18 100-plus degree days for the month of July.
KSL Meteorologist Kevin Eubank says this is a big deal.
“That’s huge. The old record for a month was 15 days back in July of 1960,” says Eubank. “We’ve had the most amount of 100-degree days in a month ever recorded.”
The overall average daily temperature for July is 81.1 degrees. Last summer, we broke the all-time record for the month of July at 85.7 degrees.
This year, Eubank says, the average temperature for July has spiked to 87.3, blowing right past the old record, leaving it in the dust.
“This month, July 2022 will go down as the hottest month ever recorded at the Salt Lake International Airport,” says Eubank.
Eubank says while we are seeing a pattern of extreme heat this summer, patterns do change. We could flip to a very stormy, wet cold pattern just as easily as we saw a pattern of dry, 100-degree heat in July.
The big question, he says, is will we have any more 100-degree days in August? If we do, then that record for 100-degree summer days this year will be broken.
