ST. GEORGE, Utah — A man was shot and killed Wednesday morning near the Utah-Arizona border after police say he was acting “erratically and brandishing a firearm.”

According to a news release, the Utah Highway Patrol was notified of a suspicious vehicle at the Port of Entry just after 7:20 a.m. It was on northbound I-15 near the Utah/Arizona border.

When the UHP arrived on scene, containment positions were set up. And additional resources were brought in, including trained crisis negotiators.

Despite efforts by law enforcement to end the situation peacefully, the man was shot and died at the scene. The UHP says there is no active threat to the public.

What action led up to the man being shot was not mentioned in the news release.

The Washington County Critical Incident Task Force will be in charge of the investigation into the incident. The identity of the man killed has not been released.
