SALT LAKE CITY — Dr. Martin W. Bates was unanimously voted by the Salt Lake City Board of Education to serve as the interim superintendent of the Salt Lake City School District on Tuesday evening.

Dr. Timoty Gadson stepped down as SLCSD superintendent less than two weeks ago after having been on leave since July. According to the district Gadson left for personal reasons.

After spending more than 30 years in education, Bates retired in 2021. He started out as a special education and math teacher. Later in his career, he served in several school and district administrative roles, including the last 11 years as superintendent of the Granite School District.

Bates agreed to come out of retirement until a permanent replacement can be found by the Salt Lake City Board of Education.
