SALT LAKE CITY — Idaho Seventh District Judge Steven W. Boyce has suspended the murder trial of Lori Vallow Daybell.

The suspension is in relation to a motion brought by Daybell’s attorneys that reportedly involved Vallow Daybell’s competency to stand trial.

On Oct. 3, attorneys for Vallow Daybell filed several motions, including a motion to stay the case. As a result of the motions, Judge Boyce issued an order indicating the case was “hereby suspended until a determination of Mrs. Daybell’s competency to stand trial can be determined.”

Court documents also show that a closed hearing was held on Oct. 5 “to discuss with all parties future proceedings relating to the defendant’s fitness to proceed to trial.” However, information from this hearing is deemed “exempt from public disclosure.”

The trial was scheduled to begin Jan. 9, 2023.

Vallow and her husband, Chad Daybell, face murder and conspiracy charges related to the deaths of Lori’s two children and Chad’s ex-wife.

Vallow Daybell is charged with first-degree murder related to the deaths of Tylee Ryan and J.J. Vallow, her children. Chad Daybell is charged with the murder of a woman he was previously married to, Tammy Daybell.
