SALT LAKE CITY — As temperatures gradually start to fall, the need for watering your lawn this year is no more. According to experts, it’s time to turn off the sprinklers for the year.
Taun Beddes, Utah State University horticulturist and co-host of KSL Greenhouse, said most lawns in northern Utah use Kentucky blue grass, which is durable and doesn’t need as much water.
“I’ve got sections of my lawn that I haven’t watered in a month that are still green. And so, Kentucky blue grass is a lot more suited to growth in cool weather and is actually a little more drought-hardy in cool weather,” Beddes said.
Beddes said that given the state of the drought, watering your lawn at this point of the year would be irresponsible. You won’t need to water your lawn again until May or June of next year.
There is still something you can do to take care of your lawn though.
Beddes said fertilizing your lawn at this point is key since it’ll preserve nutrients for your lawn next year. He also recommended cleaning out your irrigation system, especially if you have non-flexible piping.
