SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Department of Transportation announced in a press release that it will open a new toll Express Lane as soon as Monday, Oct. 31. The lane will run on both north and southbound lanes on I-15 between Layton and Ogden.

Mitch Shaw, the senior communications manager with UDOT told KSL NewsRadio in an email that the Express Lane toll amount will depend on congestion and vary from 25 cents to $2.

“The Express Lanes system currently runs from Spanish Fork to Riverdale, making it the longest continuous carpool lane segment in the United States, spanning 82 miles,” said Shaw.

UDOT said this expansion will help with congestion along I-15.

Purchasing toll pass

According to the UDOT website, each Express Pass costs $9.65, plus tax and shipping, as well as a monthly $2.50 for administrative costs.

“Solo drivers can use the Express Lanes by purchasing an Express Pass, which is a small radio frequency transponder that you mount to your windshield behind the rear-view mirror,” said Shaw.

Vehicles not allowed in the express lanes include the following. Vehicles over 12,000 lbs, those pulling trailers or those solo drivers without an Express Lane or Clean Vehicle pass.

HOV vehicles can still access the lane for free.

Drivers are also encouraged to use the UDOT website or app. There you can find the latest information on traffic and construction on roadways across the state.
