Sugar House fire residential evacuations lifted

SUGAR HOUSE, Utah — Residential evacuations have been lifted following a four-alarm fire in Sugar House Tuesday night.

Salt Lake City Fire Department said in a post made to its Twitter, that residents of the Vue and Sugarmont apartments may return to their units.

Tuesday night’s fire resulted in the evacuation of as many as 200 people from nearby apartment buildings. Some people were not able to go home for more than five days.

“It feels good to be back home,” said Cruz Martinez who lives in the Sugarmont Apartments. “It feels good the fact that…no one was hurt…and [that] my belongings are inside.”

Some businesses will remain closed until further notice. According to the Salt Lake City Fire Department’s website, businesses from Standard Optical going North on Highland Drive, all on the East side of Highland Drive and Zion’s Bank are open.

Based on information provided by fire officials, the only businesses still closed are Buffalo Wild Wings, Cubby’s and Coldstone Creamery on the West side of Highland Drive.
