HILDALE, Utah — This was the inaugural season for Water Canyon High School’s football team and they started it off with a bang. Not only reaching the playoffs but decisively advancing to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the next challenge facing the team was a formidable foe, the snow.
The next game was to be played in Cedar City at Southern Utah University, and the weather was taking a turn. Water Canyon Principal Steve Showalter said they did not have the equipment to keep their players warm because they are a new school.
But luckily for them, Dixie High School was able to fly by and lend a helping hand.
Dixie High School’s football coach Blaine Monkres said it was an easy decision and believes any other school in the district would have done the same.
“It’s a tight-knit community,” said Monkres. “You know, everybody knows everybody. I think all the schools are willing to help out the other schools.”
Principal Showalter said he agrees with coach Monkres wholeheartedly.
“It’s just a really good situation we have at Washington County School District with people being able to help each other,” said Showalter. “And he’s 100% right. We would’ve done the exact same thing.”
Showalter continued, saying that although they lost the game today, this act of kindness gave the students and community a season to remember.
“For people who play football, kids especially, playing in the snow game was actually one of those things they really enjoy or remember doing,” said Showalter.
