FARMINGTON, Utah — Among the issues facing voters in the Davis School District as next week’s election draws near is a $475 million bond.
The district claims it won’t cause increased tax rates in the county. However, it also says it does depend on rising property values, new businesses and new homes to keep broadening the tax base.
District spokesman Chris Williams says the new bond will be funded by paying off the older ones.
“This gives us an opportunity to layer new bonds into that space,” he said. “So that the tax rate remains the same. The last thing the Board of Education wants to do is increase taxes.”
Upgrades to Sunset Junior High School will be funded by the bond. Improvements to the school will include air conditioning, according to principal Tami Oliver.
“We don’t have any AC in the building,” Oliver said. “We have a few swamp coolers. So, in the fall and spring the kids are hot.”
Additionally, the bond will also fund two new schools to be constructed in northwest Davis County. District officials say that is where they are seeing the largest growth.
