Winter storm warning issued for Utah mountains through Thursday

SALT LAKE CITY — A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the mountains of Utah, according to the National Weather Service.

The timing of this warning goes as follows:

Northern mountains: Tuesday 5 a.m. to Thursday 11 a.m.
Southern/central mountains: Tuesday 5 p.m. to Thursday 5 a.m.

Winter storm warning

The NWS reported Monday afternoon that moisture from the storm was beginning to develop in northwestern Utah. It was expected to move southeast and increase in coverage late Tuesday night into Wednesday.

KSL TV’s Kevin Eubank reports the mountains could see 1 to 2 feet of snow from the storm. Eubank also says the valleys will see rain on Tuesday before it turns to snow on Wednesday.

Outside of the mountains, Park City and Heber City could see the biggest snow totals out of this storm.

The NWS is forecasting Park City to receive anywhere between 8 and 12 inches of snow, while Heber City could see 4 to 6 inches.

The NWS is also forecasting 2 to 3 inches of snow between Salt Lake City and Nephi. In northern Utah, places such as Ogden and Logan could also see 1 to 2 inches.

Wind gusts

There were some strong wind gusts Monday throughout the state. Here are some of the strongest reported, according to the NWS.

Central Wasatch Peaks – 81 mph
Signal Peak – 75 mph
Ogden Peak – 73 mph
Iron Cap – 68 mph
Tooele – 67 mph

The high wind gusts caused power outages in Salt Lake County Monday morning. In a post on Twitter, Rocky Mountain Power says it will continue to monitor the storm through Wednesday morning.
