CENTERVILLE, Utah — A Centerville teen who was struck by a vehicle last week has passed away from her injuries, according to a news release from the Centerville Police Department.

On Nov. 9, 16-year-old Maya Staples was walking in a crosswalk in the area of 2025 N. Main Street when an SUV hit her traveling southbound.

Centerville Police Chief Paul Childs said the teen, thrown in the air 50 to 60 feet, suffered significant injuries. Additionally, the victim was in an established crosswalk at the time of the incident, according to police.

Staples was transported and remained at Intermountain Medical Center for care.

However, on Wednesday, the family informed Centerville Police that medical staff declared her brain dead. Her care team has transitioned to organ donation.

The driver of the SUV stopped at the scene and cooperated with authorities in the investigation.

However, a news release issued Wednesday by Centerville Police said the investigation is still ongoing.
