One skier injured in avalanche in Little Cottonwood Canyon

SALT LAKE CITY — One skier was injured in an avalanche Tuesday afternoon in Little Cottonwood Canyon, according to Unified Police.

The Utah Avalanche Center confirmed the avalanche near the Tanners Campground around 2 p.m.

Unified Police say the exact area of the avalanche is known as pink pine. It is between white pine and red pine.

Furthermore, Unified Police say there were two skiers in the area – a male and female. Both skiers are in their 20s. 

Police say the female skier was able to avoid the avalanche. However, the male was caught in it. Police say the victim was not buried in it, but did suffer some serious injuries, including a dislocated shoulder, broken ribs and teeth knocked out. 

According to Unified Police, the avalanche in Little Cottonwood Canyon was roughly 100 feet wide and 3 feet deep.

Once off the mountain, the victim was transported to an area hospital.
