UINTAH COUNTY, Utah — An officer-involved shooting left one man dead in Uintah County Friday morning.

A news release from the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office said police responded to a disturbance at a motel in Ballard around 3:30 a.m.

Uintah County Sheriff’s Officers asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs for help responding to the situation.

A man there fired at least one round, hitting a BIA officer. At that point, several officers returned fire.

Authorities transported the suspect to the hospital where he later died.

The BIA officer that was shot was saved from serious injury by his bulletproof vest. He received treatment from a hospital before being released.

The release from the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office said the Utah State Bureau of Investigations would handle the officer-involved critical incident.
