SALT LAKE CITY–  The Utah Highway Patrol will be increasing patrol cars along Utah road this holiday season to help deter impaired.

DUIs that involve a combination of both drugs and alcohol are on the rise.

As many as two thirds of tested drivers have come back with a combination of drugs and alcohol. Not only is UHP seeing street drugs combined with alcohol but also prescription drugs and sometimes the combination is unintentional.

UHP Sgt. Cameron Rogan wants people to be careful when mixing substances. He recommends checking the affects of your medications before getting behind the wheel.

“We just caution people as they take medications and drink alcohol or combine things to pay special attention to the way that they feel,” said Roden.

Roden warned that combining drugs and alcohol can increase the effects of each one and recommended checking how prescriptions interact with alcohol.

He also recommended making travel plans ahead of time so you don’t drive impaired after holiday celebrations.
