SALT LAKE CITY – Are you interested in gardening but not sure where to learn? Utah State University Extension offers a Master Gardener Program for anyone who wants to learn about gardening and home horticulture.

Michael Caron, Extension Assistant Professor at Utah State University, joined Maria and Taun at the KSL Greenhouse show last week to talk about the program.

The master gardener program was created by an extension professor in Washington. He wanted to train people to interact with the public and gain support for the program. Due to its success, the program became known worldwide.

The master gardener program in Utah doesn’t have a strict administrative structure. Therefore, not every county sets up its class the exact same way. Each county has the freedom to arrange the class according to the needs of the students.

Another great feature of the master gardener program is that it will be available virtually, live and recorded.

“We will be broadcasting over Zoom, so we will have people from counties that don’t offer the master gardener program or can’t attend in person,” Taun said.

The class covers about 15 subject areas, which is about the same as an introduction to horticulture class that you would take at a university.

Caron said Utah county charges $200 for the class, and a lot of other counties in Utah charge about the same amount.

If you want to learn from other gardeners and enjoy some hands-on planting experience, make sure to sign up! Don’t worry if you don’t have any experience! The program is here for you to learn and grow.
