SALT LAKE CITY – Sheriden Hansen, extension assistant professor and horticulturist at the Utah State University Botanical Center, joined Maria and Taun on the KSL Greenhouse Show to discuss how she decides what seeds to plant in her garden.

“There’s usually a story associated with some of the plants that I select,” Sheriden said. She also said she likes to choose seeds with stories that she can preserve for a long period of time.

Some of the outlets where she looks for seeds are Baker Creek Seeds, Johnny’s Seeds, and Pinetree Garden Seeds.

One thing Sheriden suggests you to do when looking for seeds is to make sure you look at reviews, so you don’t run into seed-quality problems.

“When something doesn’t go right, you take it as this failure and you take it personal, but it’s a learning experience,” Sheriden said.

Not everything grows the way you want here in Utah. Last year, Sheriden lost an entire raised bed of tomatoes because they weren’t the best to grow in Utah. But that doesn’t mean she gave up.

So, then what does she recommend you plant?

“I always plant one thing, or two or three that I know that I love to eat that my kids will eat,” she said. For her, it’s the Burpee Better Boy tomato.

Then you can throw in one or two new things to plant, so you can experience that variety every year.
