Monday morning’s cold temperatures nearly set new records

SALT LAKE CITY — The temperatures in certain parts of the state during the early hours of Monday nearly set new records.
KSL meteorologist Kevin Eubank joined Jeff Caplan’s Afternoon News on Monday to discuss the bone-chilling temperatures.
Eubank says that Logan saw a low of 30 degrees below zero in the overnight hours of Sunday into Monday. He says that was the coldest morning in Logan in 33 years.
But that wasn’t the coldest place.
Approaching new temperatures records
According to Eubank, Peter Sinks, located in the Bear River Mountains east of Logan, saw an overnight low of 60 degrees below zero. Eubank says Peter Sinks holds the all-time coldest temperature in the state at 68 below.
“That’s just regular air temperature,” Eubank said. “Windchill beyond that, it’s just, it’s unfathomable.”
“We always talk about Peter Sinks,” Caplan said. “It’s a place where there are mountains, and nobody lives. And somebody always says ‘Who cares? Nobody lives there.’ But look at that low temperature, it’s just fascinating.”
“It’s a record,” Eubank said. “That’s why people care, Jeff is because it’s a record there. And so that’s what they’re looking for.”
Frostbite is a concern
Caplan asks if frostbite is a concern for Monday night.
“It is for anyone who’s out on the streets,” Eubank said. “And we’ve talked about our homeless friends that just don’t have shelters to go to or are choosing not to go to those shelters.”
Eubank says Salt Lake City is expecting a low of 8 degrees Monday night. Additionally, he says Monday morning was the coldest morning Salt Lake City had experienced in four years.
“Even without the wind in those temperatures with exposure,” he said. “You definitely can get frostbite in a hurry, and it can result in death if conditions are correct.”
