SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Community College is hosting numerous events in recognition of Black History Month.

Of the events hosted, one includes a viewing of the Beloved Community Project film followed by a discussion panel. The viewing and discussion panel will take place on Feb. 13 from 2-4 p.m. in the SLCC Taylorsville Redwood Campus, Technology Building Auditorium.

According to a release from SLCC, the panel’s discussion will include King’s “I Have a Dream” speech for our nation and where America stands 60 years later.

“If we can teach hate, then surely, we can teach love. Indeed, love is the only thing that can defeat hate,” expressed Marian Howe-Taylor, co-producer of the Beloved Community Project film.

The film’s focus is on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s description of a Beloved Community. Seeking to create civil, equitable, and harmonious communities by non-violent social change.

Another event to note is a concert taking place on Feb. 15 from 7:30-9 p.m. at SLCC South City Campus, Multipurpose Room.

Award-winning lyric baritone, Robert Sims, will join the SLCC Chamber Singers in civil rights songs and spirituals. Sims is a soloist/historian of African American art songs.

Further, from Feb. 9 through March 23, an exhibit will be in place showcasing the Beloved Community Photography Projects work in the South City Campus in the George S. & Dolores Doré Eccles Art Gallery.

The Beloved Community Photography Project helps connect SLCC faculty with local elementary students to participate in activities exploring King’s legacy.
