SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department Hazardous Devices Unit (HDU) safely removed three sticks of dynamite from a house earlier this week.

On Wednesday, police were notified that a man had found three sticks of dynamite while cleaning out his attic. Police responded to the residence in the area of 200 S. Iowa Street just before 10 p.m.

As officers were en route to the scene, they were informed the man had moved the dynamite to an outside freezer.

Once on the scene, law enforcement personnel temporarily blocked off the street and secured the area. Additionally, the assistance of the HDU was called in. It took the dynamite into possession for further investigation.

Authorities want to remind community members to never move or touch anything that looks suspicious. In such instances, a person should call 911 and follow the instructions of dispatch.

According to a news release from SLCPD, the HDU is a coalition of law enforcement members from around the state. These law enforcement members have received certification and specialized training in explosive device assessment. The HDU receives training year-round using the nation’s best practices.
