ALPINE— The Alpine School District’s Board of Education has changed its general boundary study and will instead conduct a formal school boundary and potential closure study.
This formal study will provide more information for board members to help finalize and potentially pass their proposal to redistribute and consolidate school boundaries.
Their proposal includes closing five elementary schools, building a few more schools, and re-writing current boundaries within the Alpine School District.
The five elementary schools that may close are:
“These five schools, they all have seismic concerns, they have declining enrollment, and the schools nearby have available space for the students,” said Executive Director of External Relations, David Stephenson when asked why these schools were selected for potential closure.
If passed, the proposed boundaries and merges for schools districts would be as follows:
At this time, Stephenson said the board has “already approved two boundary adjustments in schools within Alpine District.”
These two approved adjustments include building a new elementary school in Eagle Mountain and adjusting boundaries for junior high schools in Lehi.
The school board will hold various open houses and district board meetings where public comment will be welcome. The full schedule for these meetings can be found on their website.
The next board meeting will be held March 14th, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the district office.
