BOX ELDER, Utah — A crash in Box Elder County Monday morning has taken a third life.

One of the people in a passenger car involved in the crash died after being hospitalized.

The Utah Highway Patrol said the trouble started with an accident near milepost 357 when two semi trucks crashed on northbound I-15 in Willard at 12:30 p.m.

“We had a jacknived semi on one side and a box truck on another,” said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden, “and traffic was backed up in this area.

“A semi was approaching and was not able to get stopped before they hit a red passenger car and then pushed that (red car) into multiple other vehicles.”

The driver of the first semi died on the scene, as well as the driver of the red car.

The passenger of the red car was transported in critical condition, and died later Monday afternoon.

The accidents closed the freeway for most of Monday afternoon.

“There are three semis involved in this crash,” Roden said. “So clean-up time is going to take awhile for them to get all of these vehicles cleared.”

Later, UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden addressed the severity of the crashes this winter.

“Our most dangerous time of year,” said UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden, “where we see the most fatalities, is that 100 deadliest days of summer.

But over the last few months, we have seen some significant crashes resulting in fatalities.”
