Tips for planting and growing peas in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – On the latest KSL Greenhouse show, horticulturists Sheriden Hansen and Liz Hamilon joined Maria Shilaos as guest co-hosts to talk about growing peas.
In Utah, gardeners usually plant peas between April 15 and May 15. However, this year has been quite different with the constant snowing. That didn’t stop Sheriden, though. She loves having peas in her garden, so she went ahead and planted her peas in pony packs.
“Soaking your seeds before you plant is one way to kind of get them going a little bit faster—get that germination happening,” Sheriden said.
There are a number of different types of peas that you can plant. Sheriden likes the snow peas because they have a flat pod and taste very sweet and crisp.
Another type is the shelling peas, which are also called English peas. These are great because you can easily sit down with a friend and talk for hours while removing the shells.
“There are different varieties; there are dwarf ones, there are bush types, there are vining types,” Sheriden said.
She likes the vining peas because they are a bit more prolific when it comes to production. If you don’t have a lot of room, then you may want to consider bush peas.
It’s not too late to start planting!
“If you have soil that is dried out and you can work that soil, get your peas in as soon as possible,” Sheriden said.
