Sister missionary passes away after short illness in Hondruas

SALT LAKE CITY — A sister missionary serving in the Honduras San Pedro Sula West Mission passed away Tuesday evening, according to a news release from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The release says, Sister Maria Jose Chavez Garcia, 20, began feeling ill a few days ago. She was ultimately admitted to the hospital where she was diagnosed with leukemia.

Medical personnel began emergency treatment. However, she suffered complications and passed away from the illness.

According to the release, Chavez was from Cuilapa, Guatemala, and had been in the mission field since August 2022.

The church issued the following statement.

“We send our love and prayers to Sister Chavez’s family and the missionaries of the Honduras San Pedro Sula West Mission as we remember her faithful service,” the statement said. “We pray they will each feel the love of the Savior during this difficult time.”
