SALT LAKE CITY — The snow is gradually melting, meaning it’s time to get started on spring lawn care.
On the latest KSL Greenhouse show, Taun and Maria talked about the many things you can do to care for your lawn during the warm spring weather.
The first thing Taun suggested doing is raking off the damage from the snow mold on your lawn so that it can recover more thoroughly and quickly.
“If the snow melted off and you had big dead patches on your lawn that were just brown and matted down, the first thing you would do is rake those,” Taun said.
Now is also the time to get pre-emergent down. However, not everybody needs it.
“If your lawn is relatively weed-free, there’s no reason to put pre-emergent down,” Taun said.
Maria wonders if anybody’s lawn is ever actually weed-free. She pointed out that in the first couple of seasons—when the lawn is brand new—there’s usually nothing wrong with it. On the other hand, a lawn as old as 30 years tends to have many issues.
“When you see lawns that are totally weed-free, they’re usually overly maintained,” Taun said.
There is an expectation that our lawns should be like the quality of a golf course, with absolutely no weeds. However, that’s not always the case.
“I’ve seen lawns that have been so inundated with dandelions, especially, and other weeds that the lawns are in danger of dying out,” Taun said.
We have to set our own goals in order to take good care of our lawn.
