Dash-cam video released of off-duty UHP trooper stopping wrong-way driver

TOOELE, Utah — A Utah Highway Patrol trooper is being praised for his actions earlier this week when he stopped a wrong-way driver on I-80 in Tooele County.

After receiving reports of a wrong-way driver heading east down westbound I-80, the trooper who happened to be in the area spotted the driver.

The trooper, who sustained do injuries, stopped the driver by colliding with the truck head-on causing minor injuries for the driver.

Westbound I-80 was closed for under an hour at milepost 99 while crews assessed the situation. A press release from UHP identified the trooper involved as Sgt. Chad McCoy, who’s served with the UHP for 12 years.

More information regarding the identity of the driver and the trooper has not yet been released.
