SALT LAKE CITY — Two elementary schools had implemented lockout protocol after a shooting near 1600 West and 500 South in Salt Lake City. Protocols have since been lifted.

Salt Lake City School’s spokeswoman Yandary Chatwin told KSL that Parkview Elementary and Edison Elementary are currently on lockout. Police said that one person was critically injured in the shooting.

The lockout will continue, Chatwin said, while SLC Police investigate.

Lockdown, or secure alert “means we lock the exterior doors of the school,” Chatwin said, “and business continues as usual inside the building.

“It means nobody can come in or out. So, if a parent was trying to check the student out of school or someone was arriving late, they can’t come in the building until that secure alert is lifted by police.”

Chatwin said the police activity is not related to either of the schools in lockdown.

Police have confirmed one person has died in the incident.
