SALT LAKE CITY — Grief counselors were available at Clayton Middle School on Thursday after a teen girl was shot and killed by her teenage brother. The Salt Lake City School District confirms the teen was a student at Clayton.

The district said the family isn’t comfortable sharing any more information right now. A woman who said she was an aunt of the teen told KSL NewsRadio the family is “devastated.”

A small memorial with flowers, balloons, and candles lined the sidewalk outside the home the day after the shooting.

The girl was shot and killed Wednesday at the family’s home which is near Edison Elementary School. Police say her brother was then found on a UTA bus a short time later. They haven’t said what led up to the shooting.

An email was sent to parents of Clayton Middle School students offering support.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss and know this student’s passing may have an impact on many of the students and families in our school,” the school’s principal wrote.

“For our online Clayton students, counselors will join the online class tomorrow to provide support.”

The district did not confirm whether the teen attended that school online or in person.
