Federal Prosecutors today announced indictments against six people in a drug distribution ring they say involved large amounts of fentanyl shipped in from overseas, and re-distributed in the form of pills that looked like oxycodone.
The indictment, handed up Wednesday, names Aaron Michael Shamo of Cottonwood Heights as the key player in the alleged ring.
Prosecutors say Shamo and several associates ordered illegal shipments of fentanyl from overseas, then re-packaged it in the form of pills, and fulfilled orders made over the so-called “dark web” from around the country.
US Attorney for Utah, John Huber says the shipment involved hundreds of thousand of pills.
Last November, federal authorities raided Shamo’s home in Cottonwood Heights where they say they seized more than 70,000 pills, pill making machines and cash.
The 27-year-old Shamo, 30-year-old Drew Wilson Crandall of Brisbane Australia, 25-year-old Marie Tonge and 26-year-old Lauren Ann Bustin of South Jordan, 28-year-old Mario Anthony Noble and 27-year-old Sean Michael Gygi of Midvale are also named in the indictment.
