PARK CITY — The Park City School District is the latest of several in northern Utah to announce it will increase pay for both starting and veteran teachers.

Starting pay for Park City teachers will now be $50,700 a year, plus benefits. Teachers already in the district will get a $7,000 salary increase.

A number of districts along the Wasatch Front have been engaged in what many have called a teacher “arms race,” with most now offering starting teachers about $40,000 plus benefits annually. Salt Lake City offers starting teachers $44,000.

The challenge in recent years has been to not just attract new teachers to the field but also to keep quality teachers on the job in spite of overcrowded classrooms and high workloads.

The Deseret News cites an increase in basic education funding units by the legislature as the reason why so many districts have been able to offer more money.
