SALT LAKE CITY — Keep your eyes open the next time you head to Salt Lake City International Airport to pick up a relative, friend or business associate from an incoming flight. The airport has closed the long-established park-and-wait lot on the east side of Terminal Drive.

Instead, the airport has opened a new park-and-wait lot to the south and west, on the opposite side of the road. The move is part of an ongoing construction project at the airport, which will eventually include new terminal facilities. The space occupied by the old park-and-wait lot will soon host an elevated roadway.

The switch happened at 6 a.m. on Thursday morning. Airport spokeswoman Nancy Volmer said it could catch some visitors off guard.

“If by chance someone misses that turnoff, just go around the airport on Terminal Drive,” Volmer said. “Just loop around come back around and you can enter the lot.”

The new park-and-wait facility already includes more space — 120 stalls instead of 86 — but will also feature many other upgrades when construction is complete.

“Come fall, we’ll have a convenience store with a gas station, a Costa Vida, a Beans and Brew and a Burger King. I think drivers who are waiting to pick up their passengers are really going to enjoy waiting,” Volmer said.

Maps detailing the shift are available on the airport blog.

Idling remains prohibited at the new park-and-wait lot.
