Uncertainty in Washington creating uncertainty in Utah over health insurance

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Department of Insurance officials on Thursday painted a grim picture about the federal government’s willingness to follow through on providing critical funding for insurers, which could affect Utahns’ coverage.

“I think it’s going to be a decision point for our current individual market insurers, and how they decide to move forward in 2018,” said Utah Department of Insurance assistant commissioner Tanji Northrup to the Utah Legislature’s Health Reform Task Force.

Northrup said premiums on the federal individual insurance marketplace could rise by 15 to 20 percent next year.
