Construction workers get a holiday break, lane restrictions don’t

WASATCH FRONT — While UDOT workers will have the Fourth of July off, the lane splits and restrictions will still be working. Spokesman John Gleason says this will be the case on I-215’s west side and on I-15 in St. George.
“That’s really the case with a lot of these projects. The lane splits or lane restrictions have to remain in place for safety purposes.”
But there will be lane shifts on I-70 near Richfield, starting tomorrow. “All the traffic is scheduled to shift to the westbound lanes. That will be something new for people that are traveling there for the Fourth of July.”
They have reason to believe traffic congestion won’t be as bad as it has been in previous years.
“Where this holiday actually falls on a Tuesday, we’re seeing travel being spread out over four days,” Gleason says.
He believes traffic may be heavier on city streets as people attend their local fireworks shows. It could be especially bad in Provo for people attending Stadium of Fire, since University Parkway is under construction from Orem to Provo.
Traffic could be quite bad in Idaho. Traffic officials there have taken out ads in Utah warning drivers of several projects on I-15.
