PROVO — Police are working on identifying what is behind a spike in property crimes in Provo.

Property crime in Provo was up 32 percent from the first half of 2015 to the first half of 2016, the largest jump in any city reported to the FBI for the period.

Sgt Brian Taylor says they are mapping hot spots and watching for trends, and adjusting patrols accordingly.

“We’ve known that burglars will come to Provo for the purpose of victimizing students. We’ve worked hard to get our patrols where those crimes are most likely and engage in public education campaigns to get people to lock their cars,” said Taylor.

Police say residents can prevent crime by closing garage doors, locking cars and not leaving valuables in view.
