SALT LAKE CITY – Last month American Airlines was forced to cancel dozens of flights in Phoenix when it became too hot for small jets to take off. Now as Utah’s heat wave continues, the Salt Lake International Airport says each airline in Salt Lake City will also run through a list of protocols to make sure the airplane is safe to take off.

“The air temperature, the aircraft size and load and elevation- they take that all into consideration before deciding whether or not it’s safe to fly,” said Nancy Volmer, spokesperson for airport.

She added that Salt Lake City International Airport has never been forced to cancel a flight because of the heat. If that were to happen, Volmer said each airline would have to make the call.
